Born of Osiris - A Higher PlaceBorn Of Osiris: A higher place

28/06/10  ||  Desert Eagle

In a word: refreshing. In more than one word: the rest of this review. With Born of Osiris’ latest album they have matured a bit. They are still a rather frantic mesh of metalcore, technical metal, and maybe a dash of melodic death metal but they have payed a little more attention to the atmosphere of the album. Now I realize I may have lost most of you with that last sentence but fuck you. Stop being so snooty and give this band a chance.

The vocals have definitely seen quite an improvement over their last effort. They are better layered and more, um, death-y. Also they have yet to fall victim to the annoying trend of shitty clean vocals so that is always a plus. As for the lyrics I really could not tell you because honestly who gives a fuck. I cannot even remember the last time I read the lyrics to a metal song. I will just assume they are fucking retarded and be satisfied thinking that I am most likely correct.

You know, thinking back on it, it is a little difficult assigning a defined genre for this band. It’s not that it’s groundbreakingly different or new or anything, but they blend a good deal of shit in there. I can even detect a hint of black metal in there as well, but I guess all the cool kids are doing that nowadays anyways. What is nice though is that it is not so blatantly obvious. In fact you could even call it seamless. I wouldn’t. I would say blendarific, but you could call it seamless.

Speaking of riffs, Born of Osiris ( I refuse to call them BoO) can actually bring the shred. They don’t really solo or anything but the leads and riffs and such are usually pretty intricate and quite tasty. Imagine a hot dog topped with cheese, bacon, ketchup, onions, and chicken salad. Now you understand what I am talking about right?

Really the biggest hurdle this band faces is that they are kind of a scene band. Already you know if you like or hate this band without even listening to them. That’s dumb. You’re dumb. I may lose street cred for rating this band highly but fuck it. Heh, butt fuck. But if you put your prejudices aside you might actually find a pretty good band here. Let me also recommend some tracks also to use up some more space.

“Now arise”, “An ascent”, “Faces of death”.

If you listen to all those and still do not like this band then, well shit, congratulations on at least being open-minded.
